Indoor air pollution can not only cause problems for those with respiratory illnesses such as asthma or allergies, but it can cause damage to your home’s HVAC system. While the primary job of air filters in most heating and cooling systems is to protect the system itself from damage, advanced filters can be installed that protect both the HVAC equipment and your family from indoor pollutants.
Basic Air Filters
The standard disposable filters used in most HVAC systems protect the system to some extent, but they provide very little protection when it comes to air quality. These filters remove large particles that could cause damage to the blower and other components. Clogged filters can reduce the airflow in the system, lowering efficiency and possibly leading to a damaged blower motor due to overheating or constant cycling.
High-Efficiency Filters
These types of air filters use thicker filtering elements so they can remove smaller particles. This allows them to offer enhanced protection to the HVAC system, plus good protection for your family.
The effectiveness of the filter is reflected in the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV), with a higher number being better. At the top of the scale are high-efficiency particulate absorption (HEPA) filters, which can remove over 95 percent of airborne particles. HEPA filters, however, are not compatible with all systems, as they can slow airflow in some systems.
Compared to standard air filters, high-efficiency filters are often more expensive, especially reusable models, which can simply be cleaned and replaced.
Electrostatic Filters
These filters incorporate a plastic or metal device that creates a static charge when air blows over it, attracting up to five times as many small particles as a normal air filter. Many electrostatic models are reusable.
Air Cleaners
For the cleanest air possible, consider investing in an electronic air cleaner. Air cleaners come in whole-home, permanently installed versions and portable, single room models. Though they can require a larger upfront investment, they can remove up to 30 times the dust of standard air filters.
