A dusty home is unhealthy for all, but even moreso for those with respiratory problems. Getting rid of household dust helps everyone in your home to breathe easier.
Clean the Ducts
Conditioned air passes through a network of ducts, and picks up dust it finds along the way before being blown into your living space. If it has been several years since you have had your ducts cleaned, or if you can see an accumulation of dust inside the vents, request professional services as soon as possible.
Upgrade the Air Filter
The HVAC system’s air filter serves as a line of defense against the spread of dust. While none can eliminate it completely, you can significantly reduce household dust with a good quality pleated or electrostatic filter that is changed every four to six weeks.
Launder Bedding Regularly
Dead skin flakes are among the main particles found in dust and are also a source of food for dust mites. Since your bedding collects these flakes, you can minimize their accumulation by washing bedding in hot water each week.
Clean the Closet
Your clothes continually shed tiny fibers, which wind up as part of the dust in your home. Store seasonal clothing in air tight containers and keep your closet floor clear to make regular vacuuming easier.
Use the Right Tools
Invest in a high quality vacuum with a HEPA filter and change the bag or empty the canister outdoors after each use. Dust using an electrostatic or microfiber cloth, which traps dust instead of spreading it around.
Clear the Air
While you clean, set the thermostat fan to the “on” position. This turns the blower fan on and filters the air without heating or cooling your home.
