When it comes to your home’s next heating system, chances are you’re torn between choosing a heat pump or furnace. While both types perform a great job at keeping your home nice and toasty, each heating system has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.
Furnaces
Natural gas furnaces are a common choice in homes throughout the area, thanks to their relatively straightforward and economical installation and operation. Many of today’s gas furnaces offer annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings as high as 98 percent, making them and extraordinarily efficient heating system in terms of total heat output and energy usage.
Although most gas furnaces last longer and offer excellent reliability at extremely low temperatures, they’re more expensive to install and operate than a comparable heat pump.
Heat Pumps
Air-source heat pumps work on the same principle as an ordinary air conditioner, but in reverse. Instead of transferring heat out of your home, it pulls the latent heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside, warming your home with exceptional efficiency. Most heat pumps are up to 40 percent more efficient than a comparable gas furnace.
Heat pumps are ideal for areas with relatively mild winters, but they remain effective at temperatures as low as 35 degrees. Beyond that, heat pumps tend to develop frost and ice over the outdoor unit’s coils. For this reason, most heat pumps offer a defrost mode to get things going again.
