While it seems we’re bombarded with information nonstop, tips for extending the life of your Eastman HVAC system can be among the most useful to remember and implement. A home’s HVAC equipment keeps it comfortable year-round and is likely its most expensive component. Extending its life means dependable comfort and lower energy bills year-round. These tips contribute to a longer lifetime and reduced energy consumption.
Tips for Extending the Life of an HVAC System
- Tend to the air filter. A clean filter promotes system efficiency and increases the life span of many of the HVAC system’s expensive parts. Check it monthly when it’s running often and change it when it’s coated with dust. Be sure it’s the exact size and type for your system. You can find this information in the owner’s manual or by asking your HVAC contractor. Running it with too small a filter or one that’s too dense will harm your system.
- Clean the outdoor condenser. If you use a heat pump, keep it free from vegetation year-round and make sure the condensing coil inside doesn’t accumulate dust or grass clippings. A heat pump needs a clean coil year-round for efficient heating and cooling. If you have an air conditioner, complete these tasks during the cooling season and in the spring. Both of these appliances need plenty of air circulation to work best.
- Use care when closing registers. This is one of the least known tips for extending the life of an HVAC system. Your system can actually be harmed when you close off rooms and shut registers in an effort to cut energy bills down. The added pressure inside the ducts creates leaks, which is harmful for the air handler. When you check the registers, remove any dust that has accumulated on the grills to improve airflow.
- Have your system serviced annually. Besides cleaning and adjusting all the components, the HVAC technician will clean the drainpipe and drain pan so that condensed water drains away easily.
