Want to Save Energy Dollars? Get Started Today
No matter the season, homeowners are always looking for ways to cut costs. You may not realize it, but there are a number of ways that you can save energy dollars starting right now. Here are some of our favorite techniques:
- Have the HVAC system serviced – Heating and cooling equipment will naturally lose some efficiency through normal use. To counteract this, call a professional technician to give the system an annual tuneup.
- Replace light bulbs – If you’re still using traditional bulbs, the truth is that you’re behind the times. Newer types of bulbs, such as CFLs (compact fluorescents), use only a fraction of energy.
- Unplug unused electronics – Several types of electronics, including cell phone chargers, continue to use a small amount of energy even when they’re switched off. You can prevent this by either unplugging each device individually or plugging a group of them into a surge protector and turning the unit off.
- Replace old models – If major appliances are getting old, it may be time to replace them with a more energy efficient model that’s backed up by the Energy Star label. This is especially true of your refrigerator, which is a huge energy hog.
- Use energy-saving settings – Many appliances include a low energy setting to help save. What’s the use of having the option if you don’t use it?
- Lower your water heater’s temperature – Homeowners have a tendency to raise the water heater temperature higher than it needs to be. The warm setting, 120 degrees, will suffice for your needs.
- Replace the air filter – When the air filter of an A/C, furnace or heat pump gets clogged up, the system’s efficiency will be negatively affected. It’s best to check these filters each month and replace it as necessary.
