If there’s something wrong with your furnace, it might not be obvious. Your system will still work even if it has a few problems, but these issues could increase your utility bill and make your Macon, Georgia, home uncomfortable. They will also get worse over time and require more expensive repairs. If you don’t schedule regular HVAC maintenance, you could experience an inconvenient breakdown, or find that you need to replace your entire system sooner than expected. Watch out for common furnace problems, like strange noises, a dirty air filter, or a faulty thermostat so that you can take corrective action as soon as possible.
A Lot of Noise
Banging, grinding, or loud popping noises are signs of furnace trouble. You may hear your furnace running sometimes, but new or very loud noises could indicate something serious. Squealing or screeching sounds are often signs of trouble with your furnace’s blower motor, and rumbling could mean a dirty gas burner or problems with your pilot light. Many radiators make banging noises, but they shouldn’t be loud if your system is working well.
A Dirty Air Filter
If your air filter is dirty or clogged, it can raise your utility bill, shorten your unit’s life, and even cause a breakdown. Mold can grow on a dirty filter, causing a stale or musty smell. A dirty filter can also spread dust, pollen, pet dander, and other pollutants around your home. Check your air filter once per month and replace it if it’s dirty. This simple step can help you to save energy, keep your indoor air quality high, and avoid equipment malfunction.
A Faulty Thermostat
If your furnace isn’t working or it won’t shut off, check your thermostat. You might need to switch your HVAC system to heating or change the batteries in your thermostat. If your home feels cold, your thermostat could be installed on a wall that’s exposed to a lot of sunlight where the thermostat senses a warmer temperature.
