Snow and ice in Macon and other parts of middle Georgia are rare, but it can happen. Unpredictable and underestimated winter weather over the last five years, caused damaged to many homes in our area. When the coldest weather hits, make sure your home is protected so that you can stay safe and warm inside. Implementing a few simple tips can help to protect you and your home during the cold weather season. Make sure you are not caught unprepared, by making a few changes today.
Take Care of Your Pipes
Prevent exposed pipes from freezing by protecting them with insulating foam covers. Whenever there is a freeze warning, be sure to take extra precautions, especially if you will be away from the house for a while. Don’t forget to disconnect your garden hoses and drain them before the temperature drops.
Keep Your Home Warm
Of course, you want to stay warm in the coldest temperatures, but it’s more than keeping the heater set to the right temperature.
- Keep your drapes and blinds closed over your windows until the sun is shining directly on them.
- Caulk small cracks around your windows and doors to keep the cold air out.
- If you are using space heaters, be sure to keep them away from curtains and other objects in order to prevent fires. Make sure to turn them off and unplug them when you leave home.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Hopefully you had your heating system checked prior to the start of winter. A faulty gas furnace can cause carbon monoxide leaks. Other fuel-burning items in your home can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Since we spend more time inside with doors and windows closed, during the winter months, make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
